OPEN LETTER TO TAN SRI MUHYIDDIN YASSIN,

DATUK SERI ISMAIL SABRI,  TAN SRI NOOR HISHAM

APPEAL TO ALLOW DINING IN RESTAURANTS DURING MCO 3.0

We, the undersigned, are owners/head chefs of restaurants in the Klang Valley. The Covid 19 pandemic and the implementation of the Movement Control Orders (MCO) have adversely affected our businesses, over the past one year. Unlike hawker stalls, fast food restaurants and other similar outlets, our restaurants are not suited to the delivery/takeaway model. During the past two MCOs, our sales dropped by up to 90%, and we incurred tremendous losses. Some of us have had to implement staff pay cuts, incur debts, and may have to close our restaurants if the situation does not improve.

We fully understand the need to control the pandemic, and the sacrifice that each of us must make to ensure the safety of everyone. In this regard, we have implemented stringent SOPs in our restaurants, which are constantly monitored by the local council and police. There are of course some recalcitrant restaurants/bars who flout the SOPs, but the whole industry should not be punished because of the failure of a few.

We refer to the article in https://codeblue.galencentre.org/2021/04/07/where-are-covid-19-clusters-found-in-malaysia/ It shows that out of a total of 314 Covid-19 clusters that were reported nationwide from last February 22 to April 2, factories comprised 38.54 per cent, community spread  comprised 15.29 per cent, construction sites comprised 8.6 per cent, educational sites comprised 7.96 per cent, shopping areas comprised 7.01 per cent of the clusters. Restaurants only comprise 0.96% of the clusters (or 0.31% of the total Covid case contributions from clusters). Given the foregoing statistics, it is clear that allowing dining in restaurants has only a very small impact on the spread of Covid 19.

We plead with you Sir to take our appeal into consideration, and to allow dining in restaurants during the current MCO 3.0. We undertake to continue to implement strict SOPs to ensure the safety of our staff and customers.

Thank you.
