The Tamil Nadu Government is considering leasing 2 acres of a government school, opposite Express Avenue Mall (Chennai) - to a private trust for just ₹1 per acre, to build a private college.

Yes, you read that right.

This land is not an empty site but hosts the playground and science labs of the 152-year-old Government Hobart Muslim Girls School in Chennai - that has catered to Muslim girls' education for generations. It is one of the oldest government schools in the state of Tamil Nadu. 

HOW IT STARTED

A year ago, the Hobart Alumni Foundation (HAF)—led by the PTA president—proposed leasing 2 acres of land from the 152-year-old Government Hobart Muslim Girls School to build a private minority college. Despite its name, HAF comprises mainly the PTA president’s family and real-estate associates, not broad alumni. This misleads the public into believing there’s alumni support—but real alumni and the community strongly oppose this, seeing it as a betrayal of the school’s ideals: equity, access, sports, and affordable education. 

 

 

The government issued a public notice inviting objections to a ₹1-per-acre, 60-year lease for the project. In response, over 200 objections poured into the CM’s office, Education Minister, and MLA. The proposal has resurfaced, and the community is deeply disappointed given the government’s supposed commitment to social justice.

HISTORY OF GOVERNMENT HOBART SCHOOL

Founded in 1872, Government Hobart Muslim Girls School is among the earliest known institutions in India established for the education of Muslim girls.

In 1873, Mir Humayun Jah Bahadur, a descendant of Tipu Sultan and an esteemed member of the Madras Legislative Council, donated his estate, Shah Sawar Jung Bagh, for the sole purpose of relocating and expanding this pioneering school. His son, Nawab Syed Muhammad Bahadur, was the President of the Indian National Congress in 1913 (Karachi Conference) and served as Sheriff of Madras and on national councils.

This gesture was not merely one of charity, but of deep conviction and a vision: a progressive stand for girls' education at a time when educating Muslim girls was often stigmatized.

The Sachar Committee Report (2006) identified a nationwide lack of girls’ schools, female teachers, and hostels in Muslim communities - gaps that remain unfulfilled across the country even today. Hobart School was solving this problem over a century ago and still does today.

To reduce or lease this school’s land is not just a step backward - it is a betrayal of the very purpose for which this institution was established: to provide free equitable access to education for all Muslim girls.

HERITAGE STRUCTURES 

The original building - the historic palace of Mir Humayun Jah Bahadur, hosting a library, prayer hall and classrooms - today lies in a state of disrepair. Its current condition reflects not only the neglect of successive governments, but also a blatant disregard for the preservation of educational and cultural heritage that is very important for generations of women shaped by this institution.

 

 

In 2025, the alumni of the school, pained by the condition of the playground, pooled in funds and restored the playground so more than 550 children studying currently will have access to playground. This is their right but was neglected for years to show the land as unused.

 

 

🚫 WHY WE OBJECT

Govt. Hobart School is not just land. But it’s a powerful symbol of Muslim contribution to education, especially in championing women’s empowerment, generosity, and nation-building.

For many families, Hobart was (and still is) the first gateway out of generational disadvantage. The school continues to host many first-generation learners - daughters of women who never had a chance to finish school. In a community where access to a girls’ school nearby often makes the difference between dropout and education, Hobart has been the difference. It is a space where Muslim girls are not just educated - they are seen, respected, and given a chance to dream.

To lease a part of this institution to a private trust is not merely a logistical decision - it is a permanent disruption of that dream. It sends the message that - women from some communities must surrender their only legacy & dreams for someone else’s vision of charity.

This is not just about two acres in Royapettah, Chennai. It is about what kind of Tamil Nadu we want. A Tamil Nadu where the legacy of equity continues, or one where land is quietly transferred behind closed doors?

Historic campuses like Hobart are not relics - they are living embodiments of our commitment to equity and education for all. Carving them up for private interests isn’t just a loss of land - it’s a fracture in our identity. 

"The legacy of Government Hobart School belongs to those it was built for - not those who want to profit from it. It is not to be sold or leased. It is a promise to be kept."

We are not asking for favors; we are asking for respect. We are asking for the schools that nurtured us to remain whole, not divided. We are asking for our spaces to be honored, not handed over to serve someone else’s vision.

This is not just about buildings and playgrounds. It is about protecting the spirit of an institution that taught girls to stand tall in a world that tried to keep them small. That spirit must remain whole.

That is real inheritance. That is living legacy.

To privatize a part of it - no matter the cause is to tell those families:

“This place may have built you, but your children no longer have the right to it.”

And that, no truly democratic, socially-just government should allow!

If we are to stand true to the Dravidian heritage of our land and the democratic promise it entails, we must preserve this institution which has catered to the Muslim girls for more than 150 years and honor their legacy.

In preserving its playground, its classrooms, its labs, its walls, and its spirit, we are preserving the rightful inheritance of thousands of girls still to come

"We do not protect Hobart because it’s from the past - we protect it because it still holds our future"

The objective of this PETITION is to request the Government to -

1. CANCEL the land lease plan of Government Hobart School permanently

2. ALLOCATE land anywhere else in the state for any college project and not inside Government Hobart School or any other Government School

3. RESTORE the heritage structures to protect the history and legacy of the school (Just like how Lady Willingdon and other century old government schools and colleges across Tamil Nadu has been restored)

4. REMOVE the PTA President, Vice President, and HAF Trust from roles in Hobart School for attempting to carve out public school land for private use - betraying Tamil Nadu’s values of social justice, equity, and access to quality infrastructure & education. Those who undermine these principles cannot be trusted to shape the future of our government schools. 

5. ALLOW the real old students of the school to work and develop the school to its former glory which has been systematically dismantled by the PTA over the years to make this land take-over possible.

6. APPOINT a Muslim Headmistress who:

• Understands the dynamics of the community (which forms 99% of the school’s students)
• An eligible Alumnus of the school who understands the spirit and character of the institution and fixes the institutional neglect that has happened over the years
• Has the courage to protect the school from any profiteering forces
• Has the competence to restore the school’s former academic excellence - as it once had, two decades ago.

7. CLARIFY that donations made towards the welfare of the government schools does not give donors any entitlement over the school properties, ever!

We’re not just saving a campus — we’re protecting the only space where some girls dared to dream

விவரம்

சென்னையில் யாரவது 2 ஏக்கர் அரசு பள்ளி நிலத்தை, ஏக்கருக்கு வெறும் 1 ரூபாய் விலையில் குத்தகைக்கு விடுவார்களா? 

ஆம்! இப்படி ஒரு குத்தகை விடுவதற்கு தமிழக அரசு பரிசீலித்து வருகிறது.

அந்த இடம் சென்னையின் மத்தியில் இருக்கும் அண்ணாசாலைக்கு அருகே உள்ள ராயப்பேட்டை எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் அவென்யூ மாலுக்கு எதிரே உள்ள அரசு பெண்கள் பள்ளி இடமாகும். இங்கு 152 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையான அரசு ஹோபார்ட் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் மேல்நிலை பள்ளிஇயங்கி(Government Hobart Muslim Girls School) வருகிறது. இந்த இடத்தை ஒரு தனியார் அறக்கட்டளைக்கு கல்லூரி கட்டுவதற்காக 60 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு குத்தகை விட அரசு பரிசீலினை செய்து வருகிறது. 

அதிர்ச்சியாக இருக்கிறதல்லவா? ஆனால் இதுதான் உண்மை!

 இந்த குத்தகையின் பின்னணி ?

ஒரு வருடத்திற்கு முன், பெற்றோர் ஆசிரியர் கழகம் (PTA) தலைவரின் தலைமையில் ஹோபார்ட் முன்னாள் மாணவர் அறக்கட்டளை (HAF) இணைந்து அரசு ஹோபார்ட் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளியின் 2 ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை, தனியார் கல்லூரி கட்டுவதற்காகக் குத்தகைக்கு கேட்டு விண்ணப்பித்தனர் .

இதை எதிர்த்து சுமார் 200க்கும் மேற்பட்ட முன்னாள் மாணவிகள் தாசில்தாரிடம் எதிர்ப்பை பதிவு செய்தனர் .

யார் இந்த HAF ?

"முன்னாள் மாணவர் அறக்கட்டளை (HAF)" என்ற பெயரை கொண்ட இந்த அறக்கட்டளையில் தலைவரை தவிர வேறு யாரும் முன்னாள் மாணவர் அல்ல. மேலும்,இதில் உள்ள உறுப்பினர்கள் பெரும்பாலும் தலைவரின் குடும்பத்தினர் . மேலும் இந்த குடும்பத்தினர் ரியல் எஸ்டேட் வியாபார தொடர்புடையவர்கள் .

இவர்கள் எப்படி இந்த பள்ளியின் சொத்தை பாதுக்காப்பார்கள்?

இவர்கள் முஸ்லீம் சமூகத்தின் முன்னேற்றத்திற்காக இந்த தனியார் கல்லூரியை கட்டுவதாக ஒரு பிம்பத்தை உருவாக்கி உள்ளனர்.ஏழை மாணவிகளின் இடத்தை பறித்து தனியார்மயமாக்குவதுதான் சமூக முன்னேற்றமா?

அரசு ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளியின் வரலாறு 

1872 ஆம் ஆண்டு: அரசு ஹோபார்ட் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளி நிறுவப்பட்டது 

1873 ஆம் ஆண்டு: பெண்களுக்கான பள்ளி என்ற புதுமையான முயற்சியை பாராட்டி திப்பு சுல்தானின் வழித்தோன்றலும், மதராஸ் சட்டமன்றத்தின் மதிப்புமிக்க உறுப்பினருமான மிர் ஹுமாயூன் ஜா பகதூர், 

இந்த பள்ளியை இடமாற்றம் செய்து விரிவுபடுத்தும் ஒரே நோக்கத்திற்காக தனது ஷா சவார் ஜங் பாக் தோட்டத்தை நன்கொடையாக வழங்கினார். அந்த இடம் தான் தற்போது ஹோபார்ட் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் மேல்நிலைப்பள்ளி இயங்கி கொண்டிருக்கும் இடம் 

மிர் ஹுமாயூன் ஜா பகதூர் மகன் நவாப் சையத் முகமது பகதூர், 1913 இல் (கராச்சி மாநாடு) இந்திய தேசிய காங்கிரஸின் தலைவராக இருந்தார், மேலும் மதராஸின் ஷெரிப்பாகவும் தேசிய கவுன்சில்களிலும் பணியாற்றிவர் என்பது குறிப்பிடதக்கது.

ஹோபார்ட் முஸ்லிம் பெண்கள் பள்ளி, தொண்டுக்காக மட்டும் ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது என்று இன்றைய கால சூழலில் வாழ்பவர்கள் நினைக்க கூடும், உண்மையில் முஸ்லிம் பெண்களுக்கு கல்வி கற்பது இழிவென்று கருதப்பட்ட அந்த காலகட்டத்தில் முஸ்லீம் சமுதாயத்தின் முன்னேற்றத்திர்காக தொலைநோக்குப் பார்வையுடன் நிறுவி இருக்கிறார்கள் ,நம் முன்னோர்கள்.

சாசர் குழு அறிக்கையின்படி (2006) அன்றுவரை முஸ்லிம் சமூக மகளிர் பள்ளிகள், பெண் ஆசிரியர்கள் மற்றும் விடுதிகள் குறைவாக உள்ளனர் என்று தெரிவிக்கிறது. ஆனால் ஒரு நூற்றாண்டுக்கு முன்பே இந்த சவாலைக் கடந்து, பெண்களுக்காக பள்ளியைத் தொடங்கி, 152 ஆண்டுகளாக கல்வி வழங்கி வரும் ஹோபார்ட் கல்வி நிறுவனத்தை மேன்மைப்படுத்தவும், பாதுகாக்கவும் நாம் அனைவரும் பொறுப்பேற்க வேண்டியது அவசியம்.

இத்தகைய வரலாற்று சிறப்பு மிக்க பள்ளியின் நிலத்தை குறைக்கவோ அடிமட்ட விலைக்கு குத்தகைக்கு விடவோ முயற்சிப்பதை சாதாரன தவறாக பார்க்க முடியாது - இது, அனைத்து மாணவிகளுக்கும் சமத்துவமாகக் கல்வியை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்ற தூய நோக்கத்தையே கேள்விக்குள்ளாக்குகிறது. இது பெரும் துரோகமாகும்.

பாரம்பரியக் கட்டிடங்கள்

மிர் ஹுமாயுன் ஜா பஹதூரின் (Mir Humayun Jah Bahadur) வரலாற்றுப் சிறப்புமிக்க அரண்மனைதான். இந்த பள்ளியின் முதன்மையான கட்டிடமாக இருந்தது — அங்கே நூலகம், தொழுகைக்கூடம் மற்றும் வகுப்பறைகள் இருந்தன. ஆனால் இன்று, அந்த கட்டிடம் பராமரிப்பின்றி மிகவும் சீர்கெட்ட நிலையில் உள்ளது.

இது, தமிழ்நாட்டில் தொடர்ந்து ஆட்சி செய்த அரசுகளின் கவனமின்மையை காட்டுகிறது. இந்த கல்வி நிலையம் பல தலைமுறை மாணவிகளின் வாழ்க்கையில் முக்கிய பங்கு வகிக்கிறது. இது போன்ற கல்வி நிறுவனங்களை காக்க வேண்டியது அரசின் கடமையாகும்.

🚫 எதற்காக எதிர்க்க வேண்டும்?

அரசு ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளி வெறும் நிலம் மட்டும் அல்ல — கல்விக்கான இஸ்லாமிய சமூகத்தின் அற்பணிப்பு, பெண்கள் மேம்பாட்டிற்கான போராட்டம், பெண்களின் கல்வி வழியாக தேசிய முன்னேற்றத்தில் அவர்கள் கொண்ட பங்களிப்பு ஆகியவை இணைந்த வலிமையான அடையாளம் ஆகும்.

இந்த பள்ளியை நம்பி பல ஏழை குடும்பங்கள் உள்ளனர் .இந்த பள்ளி பல முதல் தலைமுறை மாணவிகளை உருவாக்கி வருகிறது.இப்படிப்பட்ட இந்த பள்ளியில் இரண்டு ஏக்கர் நிலத்தை தனியாருக்கு கொடுப்பதன் மூலம் ஏழை மாணவிகளின் உரிமை பறிக்கப்படுகிறது .இவர்கள் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் முன்வைக்கும் கருத்து 500 மாணவிகளுக்கு இவ்வளவு இடம் எதற்கு ? இந்த பள்ளியியின் குறிப்பிடத்தக்க நிலத்தில் முன்னாள் சொல்லப்பட்ட மீர் ஹுமாயுன் ஷா அரண்மை உபயோக படுத்த முடியாத நிலையில் உள்ளது .இந்த பள்ளியின் வகுப்பறை போக மீதம் இருப்பது பள்ளியின் விளையாட்டு மைதானம் மட்டுமே . இந்த மைதானத்தை தவிர வேறு எந்த காலியான இடமும் இல்லை.

2025-ல் இந்த பள்ளியின் விளையாட்டு மைதானத்தின் மோசமான நிலையை கண்டு வருந்திய பள்ளியின் முன்னாள் மாணவர்கள் (Alumni’s), தங்களால் முடிந்தளவில் நிதியை திரட்டி மைதானத்தை புதுப்பித்தனர். இதன் மூலம், தற்போது பள்ளியில் பயிலும் 550-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட மாணவிகள் அந்த மைதானத்தை பயன்படுத்தும் வாய்ப்பு பெற்றுள்ளனர்.  இந்த இடங்களை எல்லாம் பயனற்ற நிலங்களாக கணக்கு காட்டவே தற்போதைய நிர்வாகம் பல ஆண்டுக்களாக புணரமைக்க எந்த நடவடிக்கையும் எடுக்காமல் இருக்கிறது. 

பெண்களின் பாரம்பரிய உரிமையையும், கனவுகளையும், லட்சியங்களையும் யாரோ சில தனியார்களின் சுயலாப திட்டங்களுக்காக தியாகம் செய்திட வேண்டுமா ?

நாம் எப்படிப்பட்ட தமிழ்நாட்டை விரும்புகிறோம் -சமத்துவமிக்க தமிழ்நாடா? அல்லது, அரசு பள்ளி நிலங்களை தனியாருக்கு ஒப்படைக்கும் தமிழ்நாடா?

அரசு ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளியின் மரபும் உரிமையும், அதற்காக கட்டப்பட்ட மாணவிகளுக்கே உரியது — அதிலிருந்து லாபம் காண துடிக்கும் தனிநபர்களுக்கானது அல்ல.  ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளி விற்பனைக்கோ, குத்தகைக்கோ அல்ல.இந்த பள்ளியின் ஒவ்வொரு அங்குல இடமும் நம் வருங்கால சந்ததிகளுக்காக பாதுகாக்க பட வேண்டியவை.

நாங்கள் யாசகம் கேட்கவில்லை; எங்களின் உரிமையை கேட்கிறோம்.எங்கள் இடங்கள் மற்றவர்களின் சொகுசுக்காக ஒப்படைக்காமல், பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதையே வலியுறுத்துகிறோம் .

ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளி போன்ற வரலாற்றுச் சிறப்பு மிக்க கல்வி வளாகங்கள் பழைய நினைவுச்சின்னங்கள் அல்ல —அனைவருக்கும் சமத்துவமான கல்வி வழங்க வேண்டும் என்பதில் நம்முடைய உறுதியை பிரதிபலிக்கும் உயிருள்ள அடையாளங்களாகவே இவை இருக்கின்றன.

இன்னும் நம்முடைய பல மாணவிகளின் எதிர்காலத்தை கையில் ஏந்தி நிற்கிறது என்பதற்காகவே காத்து நிற்கிறோம்.

இந்த மனுவின் மூலமாக தமிழ்நாடு அரசிடம் நாங்கள் வைக்கும் கோரிக்கைகள் இதுவே —

1. அரசு ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளி நிலத்தை தனியாருக்குக் குத்தகைக்கு விடும் திட்டத்தை முழுமையாக ரத்துசெய்ய வேண்டும்.

2. கல்லூரி கட்டுமானத்துக்கான நிலம் தேவை என்றால், மாநிலத்தின் வேறு எந்த பகுதியிலும் ஒதுக்கலாம் — ஆனால் அரசு ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளி அல்லது வேறு எந்த அரசு பள்ளியிலும் அனுமதிக்க கூடாது .

3. ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளியின் வரலாற்று முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த கட்டிடங்களை, அதன் பாரம்பரியமும் கல்வி மரபும் பாதுகாத்து நல்லமுறையில் சீரமைத்து தர வேண்டும் — (ப்ரெசிடெண்சி ,லேடி வில்லிங்டன் பள்ளிகளை உதாரணமாக எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம்)

4. அரசுப் பள்ளி நிலத்தை தனியாருக்காக பிரித்து கொடுத்து அதன் மூலம் லாபம் காண நினைக்கும் , PTA தலைவரையும் துணைத் தலைவரையும், HAF அரகட்ட்டளையின் மீதும் ஹோபார்ட் பள்ளியின் அனைத்து பொறுப்புகளிலிருந்தும் உடனடியாக நீக்க வேண்டும்.
தமிழ்நாட்டின் சமூகநீதி, சமத்துவம் மற்றும் தரமான கல்வி திட்டங்களை நிலைநிறுத்தும் அடிப்படை நெறிமுறைகளை கெடுக்கும் வகையில் இவர்களின் செயல்கள் உள்ளது .

5. பல ஆண்டுகளாக PTA திட்டமிட்டு பள்ளி நிலத்தை தனியார் கட்டுப்பாட்டுக்குள் கொண்டுவர முயற்சி செய்கிறது அதுமட்டுமல்லாமல் பள்ளியின் பல செயல்பாடுகளை முடக்கி வைத்திருந்தது என்பதும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது ஆகையால் பள்ளியின் (உண்மையான) முன்னாள் மாணவர்கள் (Alumni’s), பள்ளியின் முந்தைய சிறப்பான நிலையைக் மீட்டெடுக்க  அனுமதிக்க வேண்டும்.

6. அரசுப் பள்ளிகளின் நலனுக்காக நன்கொடை அளிப்பவர்கள் , அந்த பள்ளியின் நிர்வாகத்தில் எந்த உரிமையும் இல்லை என்பதை அரசு வலியுறுத்த  வேண்டும்.

ஏனெனில் இது வெறும் பள்ளி வளாகத்தை மட்டும் காப்பாற்றுவதற்கான போராட்டம் அல்ல — பல்லாயிரக்கணக்கான மாணவிகளின் எதிர்கால கனவுகளின் அறப்போர்.
