As you are aware recently there was a drastical increase of bus fares in Tamilnadu. There are few routes where ticket prices are up around 60-70%.
Government should drive transport as a service to common people and not to see as a market to earn huge profits. If transport organization is facing bankrupt, it should restructure its hierarchy and find where the losses are happening. As mentioned by lot of people there are lot of corruption involved inside the organization, government should take action on it.
Still people say, ticket rates are far cheaper than any other state in India. I agree, but for example in Banglore the bus service is good, and insurance is also provided for each passenger in case of any accident happens. We can't compare this with SETC service. Government can increase profits, through raising beer and wine rates in TASMAC, and not in transport service.
I used to travel in 21G from mylapore to tambaram frequently, the price was 17 before and presently its 32. So totally on daily basis for both up and down its 64. I can buy a litre of petrol and travel in my bike.
Finally, the ticket price hike is encouraging people to use own transport rather than public service. This is a threat to our environment which will increase air pollution tremendously, and there is no advantage of banning manufacturing of crackers in TN. There should be a 5-10% price hike rather than a unstructured increase.
