Take urgent action on climate change in Australia
The issue
“My family lost their home, and everything we owned. We walked away in the clothes we were wearing,” reflects Steve. - The powerful role of lived experience in disaster recovery - Australian Red Cross
This story is one in thousands across Australia, from people losing so many treasured possessions, homes, and more due to the intensifying bushfires, made worse by climate change. Each fire season seems increasingly unbearable, with over 3 billion animals affected, not to mention the countless families, particularly those with young children, who find themselves suddenly homeless and their lives turned upside down.
Australia has already to see the severe impacts of climate change, with rising temperatures leading to longer droughts, more intense bushfires, and devastating impacts on our environment and communities. The 2019-2020 fire season was a turning point (NASA), revealing the crucial need to to fight its root causes. Australia's first national climate risk assessment and data from the Climate Council warn that failing to act on climate change will expose 1.5 million Australians to sea-level rise by 2050, cause an annual disaster bill of $40 billion, and risk up to $4.2 trillion in GDP damages by 2070.
We must act now to protect our homes, wildlife, and future generations. Our government has the power to implement policies that drastically curb emissions, transitioning Australia to a renewable energy future, and preparing our communities for climate impacts already underway.
Please sign this petition and stand with me, as well as the many people who care about our future, to demand action that can prevent the tragedies we have faced from becoming our new normal. You can help by sharing this story, this petition, and the urgency of this situation with those you know and on social media. Small acts like turning off the lights when leaving a room, walking instead of driving when possible and having a clothes swap with friends instead of always buying new ones are ways that we can help make tomorrow's future brighter.
The time to act is now. You can make a difference.
