Take away WIN

The Issue

We, the students of Hilliard Heritage Middle School, urge the administration to remove WIN (What I Need) periods from our schedule. While WIN was designed to provide academic support, the reality is that it has not met the needs of students or teachers. Instead, it has become a source of frustration and takes away from time that could be better spent fostering student well-being, social growth, and a more positive school culture. Eliminating WIN periods would allow us to focus on what truly benefits our community.

Our reasons are clear and compelling:

Students overwhelmingly dislike WIN: Many of us find it unhelpful, repetitive, and disengaging.
Peers share the same frustration: A large portion of the student body has voiced dissatisfaction with WIN, showing this is not an isolated concern.
Teachers agree: Several teachers have expressed that WIN creates scheduling challenges and does not achieve its intended goals.
More recess and lunch would improve morale: Longer breaks would give students time to recharge, socialize, and return to class more focused and ready to learn.
By removing WIN periods and extending recess and lunch, our school can create a healthier, more balanced environment that supports both academic success and student well-being. This change would reflect the voices of students and teachers alike, and demonstrate a commitment to building a school culture where everyone thrives.
