Thank President Obama and his administration for their historic efforts, and urge them to finish the task of protecting the sagebrush region!
The greater sage-grouse, an iconic bird known for the male’s fascinating mating dance, lives its entire life in the wide-open spaces of the American West, sharing its sagebrush home with more than 350 other species, including elk, mule deer, pronghorn, and golden eagles.
But the bird’s population has plummeted during the past century, with more than half of the sagebrush land lost or degraded, in large part because of unbalanced management of our Western lands. Fire, the spread of invasive plants, oil and gas development, and other activities have significantly affected populations.
However, there is hope: We have the opportunity to save the sage-grouse, and your voice is crucial to ensuring responsible protections for the bird and its habitat.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the largest land manager of sage-grouse country, has just released plans for conservation of the sage-grouse and its sagebrush home throughout the West. Although they represent an improvement from the draft plans released in 2013, they still need some fine-tuning to heed the best available scientific advice regarding sage-grouse habitat needs.
There is still time for the BLM to get it right. Please urge President Obama and other decision-makers to adequately conserve the remaining healthy sagebrush landscapes for the benefit of the greater sage-grouse and other wildlife that make their home in these remarkable places.
