The Issue

Sexual assault (SA) is a heinous violation that leaves lasting scars on its victims. Yet disturbingly, we still find instances in media, in conversations, and even in our communities where such acts are romanticized or normalized. This is unacceptable.

My personal connection to this issue stems from witnessing the trauma endured by those who have been victims of sexual assault. These individuals, who struggle daily with the physical and emotional aftermath, deserve our empathy and action, not to be further marginalized by a society that trivialises their suffering.

Around the globe, 1 in 3 women have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime, and these figures are mirrored by troubling statistics for men and non-binary individuals too (World Health Organization). Each statistic represents a person who deserves a world that stands by them, not against them. But normalization in media and casual settings perpetuates a dangerous cycle of silence and acceptance, one that we must break.

We call for significant changes in how sexual assault is portrayed in media and addressed in educational settings. Schools should implement comprehensive education that highlights consent and respects boundaries from an early age. Media producers and content creators must be held accountable for perpetuating harmful narratives, encouraged instead to create content that fosters understanding and empathy.

Governments should take a proactive stance by enacting laws that enforce these educational reforms and penalize the propagation of damaging content. We must demand that policymakers not only listen to survivors but also work alongside advocates to develop solutions that hold those responsible for normalization accountable.

Join us in demanding an end to the normalization and romanticization of sexual assault. Let your signature be a symbol of hope and a commitment to justice for those who have been wronged. Sign this petition and make your stand today.
