I want Honda to bring back the 2-Stroke Engine
The Issue
I am a huge Honda and 2-stroke dirt bike fan! It was disappointing when Honda stopped manufacturing the 2-stroke dirt bikes. It did nothing but upset everybody who loved 2-strokes and the Honda industry. At my local Honda store they have a 2003 CR250R that has never been started. The owner has been offered $25,000 for it and he declined, proving that these bikes are in great demand!
I’m asking that Honda start making the 2-stroke dirt bikes again for all of us riders out there! So we don’t have to start spending the amount of money we spend on buying a car on a dirt bike.
Honda stopped manufacturing the CR 85, 125, 250cc 2-Stroke dirt bikes in 2008 and the CR 500cc 2-Stroke dirt bike in 2001. Now, if you have ever ridden a 2-Stroke bike before then you will agree that it gives you a total different, if not better experience then a 4-Stroke engine does. There are some ups and down’s between the 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines, good and bad. There are significant differences and for Honda to stop making these bikes it is robbing riders from the experience and the chance to increase our skills as a rider.
There are debates all over the Internet with people saying the CRF250R 4-Stroke can do everything the CR250R 2-Stroke bike can. But they are wrong. If we where to compare the CR250R dirt bike to any 4-Stroke dirt bike the power would match up with the CRF450R and the weight would match up with a CRF250R. The point being that you can have a bike that is much lighter and is easier to handle with the same amount of power then a heavier and (for the weaker riders out there) harder to handle dirt bike.
Now, I do understand that one of the reasons they have stopped making these 2-Stoke bikes is because that these bikes burn oil. They want to help lower the smog output that we (the people) put out everyday. I just so happen to be an Engineer and am very good at math, so let me help you to understand that Honda getting ride of the 2-Stroke dirt bikes isn’t putting a dent in the output of the everyday smog that is released.
There are about 313 million people who live in the United States today. Lets assume that almost every one of them own a car and drive it everyday. On average a car gets about 25-30 mpg (miles per gallon), Semi truckers get anywhere from 2-8 mpg, a 2-Stroke dirt bike can get anywhere from 15-50 mpg (depending on how you ride it). Now, I’m sure you are all thinking well 15 mpg is terrible compared to a car, and your right if I had a car that only got 15 mpg I would be pretty upset. But people don’t spend anywhere close to the same amount of time on a dirt bike as they do in a car. On average a person will drive 13,476 miles per year. For cars they will burn anywhere from 449-539 gallons of gas per year, for semi trucks they will burn anywhere from 1,684-6,738 gallons of diesel per year (that is assuming a semi truck driver only drives 13,476 miles a year when there average is in the 100,000s of miles a year). That is only one person out of 313 million in the US alone. For dirt bike riders there isn’t any statistics out there that would tell you an average for how many miles a person would ride a year. Not every body has a dirt bike and rides it every day. So lets say for every 1,000 people one person owns a 2-stroke dirt bike. That means there are 313,000 2-stroke dirt bikes out there in the US, and lets say all of those bikes where ridden 13,476 miles in one year. So that would mean out of 313 million people the average person would only ride his bike 13 miles in one year. That would mean he burnt 0.26-0.87 gallons in one year. That is 0.0016141% the amount of gas an average person spends on a car a year and is 0.000129118% the amount of diesel an average person spends on a semi truck a year.
So what do all these number’s mean? It proves that doing away with the 2-stroke dirt bikes for smog reduction was completely ineffective. The only thing it did was robbed the dirt bike riders the amazing experience and skills it takes to ride a 2-stoke dirt bike. Please give this petition support so we can get these dirt bikes back out into the amazing world of ridding.
