RE Taiwan native languages and cultures on the brink of extinction.

Dear President Tsai,

We are grateful to know that you were able to use Taiwanese Taigi to address the opening ceremony of the 23rd World Taiwanese Culture Summit. It is an inspiration to all of us that one day more government officials will address the public in native Taiwanese languages, as Taiwanese people are striving to build a Taiwanese Consensus.

As we commemorate the 74th anniversary of the 228 Memorial, we are writing you this public letter in the hope that it will raise public awareness of the need for Taiwanese Cultural Transitional Justice. We would like to make the following declarations:

1. The linguistic genocide committed by colonial regimes in the past decades has left Taiwan native languages and cultures on the brink of extinction.

2.  We urge that Taiwan Government should implement a language policy based on equality and transitional justice. The budget for promoting Taiwanese Taigi culture should be raised to the same comparable level as other native language groups.

3. We shall commit ourselves to use our mother tones in our everyday life, especially at public events.

Sincerely,

World Taiwanese Culture Congress
