Why this petition matters

Started by Hunter Franklin

We, the members of the Syracuse Orange Family, Students, Parents, and Alumni, ask that the University suspend raising tuition for the academic year of 2020-2021.

While we all bleed orange, we do not bleed money.  Families should not have to choose between their financial security and a quality education.  Yet, in raising tuition, during a time that many families have lost jobs, been furloughed, or had salaries reduced, the University is showing a lack of empathy to what is happening to their community.  It is time that the University listened to the concerns of its constituents, especially during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic and economic recession.

Syracuse University is sitting on a $1.2 billion endowment and is receiving $9.9 million in financial aid from the federal government; it can definitely survive a one-year pause in tuition increases. It is time the University makes sacrifices, like the rest of us, and prioritizes the communities it serves.
