Syracuse Schools—Turn On the A/C. Our Kids Can’t Wait!
The Issue
This week, extreme heat forced Syracuse City Schools to cancel classes for K-8 students. Temperatures inside classrooms have become unbearable for both students and teachers.
The district has already purchased more than 600 portable air conditioning units—but they’re just sitting in classrooms, unplugged.
Why? Because the district hasn’t completed installation or approved them for use yet. Officials say they’re still assessing power draw and window fasteners.
Meanwhile, kids are sweating through lessons. Teachers are trying to teach in heat well above safe levels. And parents are left wondering why the A/C units are being delivered if no one is allowed to turn them on.
This isn’t just frustrating—it’s unacceptable.
New York State just passed legislation requiring classrooms to stay below 88°F and mandating schools have plans to cool things down. That law exists for a reason. Hot classrooms are a health risk. And climate change means this isn’t a one-time problem—it’s the new normal.
We’re calling on The Syracuse City School District to fast-track the installation of A/C units and ensure they’re fully operational for summer and fall.
The equipment is here. It’s time to use it.
Sign this petition if you believe no child should have to suffer through dangerous heat to get an education.
