Reduce Plastic Waste by Creating a 5 Cent Fee on Plastic Bags

The Issue

Plastic bags are used in almost every store that you go to.  This may seem like an advantage for storage and mobility of groceries but it has a major drawback.  Plastic bags are very harmful to the environment and contaminate waterways and harm wildlife. Many places have implemented a charge for bags, like Suffolk County, New York. In Suffolk County, a five cent fee was placed on each carry out bag used in a store. A carry out bag was cited as, “A bag without handles used to carry produce, meats, poultry, fish, dairy, dry goods or other non-prepackaged food items to the point of sale within a covered store or to prevent such food items from coming into direct contact with other purchased items; a bag provided by a pharmacy to carry prescription drugs; a garment bag”. The law was created to see if a ban on plastic bag distribution in retail is a feasible option. If the plastic bag fee does not reduce the amount of its use by 75% in three years, the idea of a ban would be revisited. The law was implemented on January 1, 2018 and after a year, Legis. William Spencer, from Suffolk County, had stated that plastic bag use had reduced by 80% . The money does not go to the county and instead many retailers have allocated the money to charitable foundations.  We hope to reduce the use of plastic bags and thus reduce the waste of plastic in the city of Syracuse.
