Put the Houston Bike Plan into Action!

In 2014 alone, Houston spent $3.5 billion on mobility, including construction of the Grand Parkway.
But too many of our streets remain choked, our neighborhoods disconnected, our bodies unhealthy, and our environment is threatened more than ever before.
The Houston Bike Plan, released in February 2016, sets an ambitious, but achievable vision of transforming one of the most car-dominant cities in the country into an American League of Bicyclists Gold Level Bike-Friendly City in the next decade. The Houston Bike Plan will help our city become smaller, slower, safer, friendlier, healthier, and more beautiful.
You can learn more about the plan's vision online. Here are some primary goals, as quoted from the plan:
- Provide a safer bicycle network for people of all ages and abilities through improved facilities, education, and enforcement
- Create a highly accessible, citywide network of comfortable bike facilities that connects neighborhoods to transit, jobs, and activity centers, including schools, universities, parks, and libraries
- Exceed average ridership levels in peer cities by implementing policies and programs that enable more people to ride bicycles and encourage healthy, active transportation choices

I want to live in a city where my friends and family can mount our bikes and ride safely and conveniently to our jobs and schools, to our favorite coffee shops and restaurants, to Discovery Green, to Buffalo Bayou Park. If the excitement and success of other initiatives like Bayou Greenways and Sunday Streets are any indication, many other Houstonians want that, too. Do you?
