Every day, thousands of Sydney commuters like me roll the dice crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, a vital route used by over 160,000 vehicles daily. What should be a straightforward commute is made dangerous by the bridge’s lanes, separated by nothing more than a painted line between high-speed, opposing traffic. This lack of a physical barrier has tragically claimed lives and has led to frequent head-on collisions, earning the lane an unfortunate reputation. The growing number of fatalities has only heightened the fear and anxiety surrounding this route, creating even more hazardous driving conditions. The situation is worsening, and urgent action is needed to prevent further tragedy.

We are calling on Roads NSW to undertake an independent review of engineering solutions that could further reduce the risk of head-on crashes on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Whether that solution is an upgraded lane guidance system, a movable barrier, retractable lane delineator posts, or another proven technology, the goal is simple: prevent another family from experiencing a tragedy that may be avoidable.

Many other cities had to be creative to prioritise safety of their communities, which inspired the moveable barrier system on the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1990 and the Golden Gate Bridge in 2015. This "zipper” system has drastically reduced head-on collisions, showing that it is possible to protect lives without compromising traffic flow, and it's time for Sydney to follow suit. 

We often hear that the solution is simply for drivers to stay focused and avoid distractions, but relying on everyone else’s adherence to safety standards isn’t a guarantee of protection. No one should receive the call that many families have, that a loved one’s life was taken in a preventable accident. Trusting the good judgment of strangers isn’t enough. Anyone can become distracted, experience a medical emergency, be under the influence, or even an unknowing tourist. This is precisely why safety barriers are installed across Sydney’s high-speed roads and highways to protect drivers from the unpredictable actions of others. Yet on Sydney’s most iconic bridge, we’re left vulnerable. As citizens, we expect our government to establish infrastructure that prioritises safety and minimises risks, even from others’ mistakes. It’s time the Sydney Harbour Bridge met the same standard for safety that we expect from every other freeway in our city.

This is a complex issue that requires carefully balancing safety with the traffic demands of one of Sydney's busiest routes. The purpose of this petition is to reignite discussions and inspire collaborative exploration of potential solutions within the Sydney community, local MPs, and the Ministers for Roads and Transport in NSW.
