Switch to fully electric public transportation by 2030 in Quebec

Switch to fully electric public transportation by 2030 in Quebec
The Issue
Petition to the Minister of Transportation of Quebec, Genevieve Guilbault and the Premier of Quebec, Francois Legault:
Climate change is a dire threat to humanity and the planet. The actions being taken to switch transportation to entirely electric is not occurring fast enough to make an impact on the rapid increase of Earth’s temperature. Quebec has already been devastatingly impacted by climate change through the intense floods that occurred in 2017, which resulted in the loss of lives and $225M in property damages. If we don’t act now to reduce emissions as much as possible, these floods, as well as heat waves and other extreme weather events, will occur more frequently and more intensely.
The public transportation system in Quebec is already advanced and encourages the use of buses, metros, and soon the REM to get around, but if these modes of transportation aren’t fully electric, we won’t be on track to meet the provincial goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 29 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030*. Buses are the main form of transit which students use to get to school and learn daily, so transforming the system to electric will benefit everyone, not only the environment. We, the students of John Abbott College call upon you to switch all buses, including public city buses and school buses to electric by 2035 latest.
