Dear Svitlana Berzina,

Across the world there are over 10,000 zoos, and hundreds of illegal ones that mistreat animals in several ways. However, due to their illegal status it can be hard to shut down these practices. Your zoo, the Kiev Zoo, is one of the largest zoos in the former Soviet Union and the only zoo in Kiev, Ukraine. You have about 378 staff members and receive about 280,000 visitors annually. With the excess amount of staff members it is shocking to discover the abuse the world’s precious animals suffer through daily. It has been hidden from public eye and we will no longer continue to put up with it. The time for change is now.

The Kiev Zoo is listed as one of the worst zoos in the world for animals. They are typically untreated for illnesses and are not fed, leading to starvation and malnutrition. Since 2008 the zoo lost a staggering 51 animals, some endangered, including two African lions, an Amur tiger, a brown bear and various primates. You also have lost half of your animals the past two years due to lack of basic attention and proper care of these animals. For example, one of the rhinos named Samka mourned the death of her companion Boy the elephant who died from malnutrition. To top it off a government audit discovered thousands of dollars were misspent at the zoo, while animals were illegally sold and money meant for animal feed disappeared.

We demand that money be recovered and used to support the wildlife in your zoo  like proper animal feed, medications, and treatment for your animals. Your practices of black market trafficking of animals are inhumane and wrong and must be halted immediately.
