The Issue

A petition for Skåne to have a choice.

Skåne or Scania was conquered by Sweden in 1658, following a war between kings. A war that the people had no say in. The Skånska "Snapphanar"  militia groups clashed with the Swedish military as they wanted reunification with Denmark. And a centuries long process of genocide and cultural assimilation ensued, as the people of Skåne were Danes, which was a problem for the Swedish government. Yet the Skånska identity prevailed, and although Scanians can't call themselves Danes today, we can't deny the close cultural, linguistic, and geographic ties that remain.

After centuries of destructive squabbling between kings, let Skåne decide for itself once and for all.

This is not a petition for reunification with Denmark. This is a petition for Skåne to have a choice.

A fundamental principle of international law, which we assume Sweden wants to abide by, is the right to self-determination of peoples. In accordance with international law, Skåne has the right to freely choose its sovereignty.

We ask Riksdagen to respect international law and Skåne's right to self-determination by allowing a referendum.

What role Skåne would play as a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, should such a referendum pass, is of course up for discussion. Becoming an autonomous territory of Denmark like Greenland is an option. This would allow a lot of autonomy for the very distinct region, something Skåne has always wanted.
