Mayor Pro-Tem Suzanne Hadley Must Resign
The Issue
During the era of COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, and rising concerns of implicit racism and bias in Manhattan Beach, we need leadership that cares for the safety and well-being of all people. Through her actions and words, Suzanne Hadley has displayed that she is not fit to be Mayor of Manhattan Beach in December. Her racism took a public forum in 2013 via Twitter. She retweeted a statement which reads "Somebody in Ad Land is missing a great opportunity by not drawing Obama's face on an icy pitcher of Kool-Aid." This blatant co-signing of racial stereotypes is abhorrent and should not be the sentiments of any elected official.
In a recent interview, Suzanne Hadley said she "doesn't know anyone who has died" of COVID 19, in opposition to 4th of July beach closures. Then also said "It is not the role of a society to prevent death." Hadley's disregard for the health of our community, as well as the extremely narrow-minded and sheltered view of a virus that affects mostly Black and Brown communities shows that she is not fit to handle matters of public safety.
She also was quoted as saying BLM is a "non-starter" when asked about a recent Community Forum on Policing and Partnerships in Manhattan Beach. She also said she believes BLM is "divisive".
Hadley is opposed to giving reparations to the Bruce family of Bruce's Beach. A thriving Black Owned section of beach that was stolen from them by the City after pressure from white supremacist groups including the KKK.
When asked how she would address and solve racism in Manhattan Beach, she said via email, "Also, each of us is a flawed human being. And wherever we find human beings, we will find creatures capable of evil toward their fellow man. I read a lot of books, and I'm sure you do as well, as a proud Costa graduate. I'd encourage you to continue to read all kinds of history, literature, the Bible, Shakespeare, military history, etc. Humans have been struggling with the same character flaws since "Cain slew Abel." We can never give up of course. Racism is one of the sad and horrible parts of the human heart, just like anger, jealousy, murder, revenge, selfishness, etc. There is endemic, vicious, deadly racism to this day in Africa (Hutus vs. Tutsis--as in the movie "Hotel Rwanda"), the two Koreas (North Koreans vs. South Koreans, as in the non-fiction book Nothing to Envy), Afghanistan (Hazaras vs. Pashtun, as in the book The Kite Runner) and other places like Europe, the Balkans, China, and Russia. Racism isn't uniquely American. It's as old as mankind. Just like murder.
