Support Bonnet Bay Sports Club to utilise their playing fields

The Bonnet Bay Sports Club was created to cater for a variety of sports including Baseball, Softball, Cricket and Soccer. The Club, affectionately known as “the Beavers” first played in Bonnet Bay in 1983 and in 1992 the first full Baseball field was constructed (Diamond 1). In 1994 construction of a second senior field commenced together with a Clubhouse and worksheds/storage facilities. The Club is currently in the process of adding a second story to the Clubhouse to be finished this year.
Bonnet Bay is a member of, and participates in, competitions administered by Cronulla Sutherland Junior Baseball Association, St George Baseball Association and Cronulla Sutherland Minor League Association. Last year we formed an alliance with Cronulla Sutherland Baseball Club, a major league Club representing Cronulla Sutherland Shire in Baseball NSW Premier League Divisions, including State League and the Women’s Baseball League NSW.
Currently the existing DA conditions allow for night training only. However, there is no suitable baseball field in the Sutherland Shire to allow competition night games for these senior teams. It is unfortunate that the highest level representative team for the Shire, has to actually travel outside the District to be able to play their games. It is not envisaged that playing night games would disturb the community as there will be time restrictions and other constraints.
Also, under the existing DA conditions, training only is allowed on Diamond 2, but we believe altering the conditions to allow competition games for the Minor League Associations would not impact on the community.
We are conscious of the need to keep noise to a minimum when entering/leaving the ground and we wish to work in partnership with local residents and the community. We are aware we share the environment and the surrounds at our ground, with neighbours. Our Club has a “Good Neighbour Policy” and we will co-operate with both Council and individual neighbours where any issues arise.
Baseball and Softball are great community sports that help players learn teamwork, patience, and responsibility. It is a sport that works on physical skills such as hand eye co-ordination and body strength. Our fields should be used for tee ball, Little League, Baseball and Softball. All teams are very family orientated.
We hope that you will support Bonnet Bay Sports Club to have the fields utilised properly for Baseball and softball as any underutilised fields may in fact be allocated to other sports which we believe may intrude on the community to a far greater extent than our sport of baseball.
We wish to petition Sutherland Shire Council to agree to amend the existing conditions of the Development Application in operation over Tom Evans Fields at Bonnet Bay. The purpose of this petition is to amend the conditions to allow night games and to again allow competition games to be played on Diamond 2 (the northern diamond).
