Suspend SPOT Tagging permit off South Africa

THERE ARE TWO PETITIONS. PLEASE BE SURE TO SIGN THE OTHER ONE HERE... http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-shark-men

Recent news that permits were granted to the TV Show “Shark Men” without public comment and without consideration to the findings associated with SPOT Tags cannot happen without action.

We are petitioning against the continued harmful practices of SPOT Tagging on Great White Sharks and the making of a TV Show as the basis for research.

SPOT Tagging has already proven to be more damaging to the sharks while the data gathered has been poor. Additionally, research should be conducted for the basis of research and not on the basis of a TV Show. It is inappropriate for any responsible governmental body to issue a permit without a full assessment of the techniques and without a public comment period.

We request immediate suspension of the permits to allow SPOT Tagging of Great Whites off South Africa until an appropriate public comment period has been made and an environmental assessment on the practice. Both of these items have already been implemented in other locations where Great Whites were tagged and is the responsible action by any responsible government agency involved in what has proven to be a controversial and damaging tagging technique.
