Susan Zhuang Must Resign

The Issue

To NYC Mayor Adams, New York Council Speaker Adams and Standards & Ethics Committee Chair Lady Ung:

We the undersigned demand a formal ethics complaint against Council Member Susan Zhuang whose brutal conduct against a police officer is unbecoming of a duly elected Council Member and clearly defies the City Council’s own ethics rules.

For the record, during a protest against a homeless shelter in her District in the early morning of 24 July, Council Member Susan Zhuang viciously bit a hero 9/11 veteran NYPD Deputy Chief Frank DiGiacomo on the arm, drawing blood and leaving teeth marks in his flesh. Chief DiGiacomo had was rushed to the hospital to be given a Tetanus shot and stitches to sew up the bloody wound administered by Susan's bite.

The Asian community celebrates Councilwoman Zhuang as Brooklyn’s first Chinese American Council Woman but just because Susan is one of our own does not mean we excuse her violent act. NYPD Chief DiGiacomo is the victim here not Council Member Susan Zhuang, and not the Asian community who Susan uses as a shield to hide. She must be censored by the NYC Mayor, the Council body, and Councilwoman Zhuang must apologize to take responsibility for her aggressive act.

We strongly believe Susan doing disservice to the greater New York Asian community with the continued antics and no-apology television tour. The Asian Community does not want to be seen as Anti-police because we are not Anti-police. We must have strength to call out our own neighbor when they do harm to our loyal and brave policemen. This is why we want to make sure the Council levy charges against her with equal justice as they would any other member who assaulted a police officer.

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang viciously attacked a 9/11 veteran, decorated and beloved police officer, and it was caught on video. As Asian American community leaders, we are disgusted and deeply offended by this behavior as are many members of the caring and compassionate greater New York Asian American community but may be afraid to speak up out of fear of retribution.

We are aware that earlier in the year Council Member Zhuang was subject to another investigation where she was caught using official government resources to solicit Chinese New Year parade donations for a group connected with the Chinese Communist Party. This incident was reported in the media and yet we saw no action taken by the City Council. You must not let Susan bully you to not taking action against her. Susan wants equal justice then it is equal justice she must get. We mustn't allow Susan to yell "racist!" any time she gets caught doing something wrong.

This type of wild behavior should have no place in the halls of City Hall. I implore you to take immediate action to hold Councilwoman Zhuang accountable with equal justice just as you would any other member of the body who viciously and disgracefully attacked a member of law enforcement.
