ABA: End sponsorship and promotion of baby expos with Nestle & others

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) is partnering with baby expos that have both sponsors and exhibitors who do not uphold their obligations under the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes and subsequent relevant WHA resolutions.

Example: Adelaide Baby Expo

By sponsoring and promoting these shows as a "parenting partner", the ABA is misusing the public's trust and respect to expose the public, especially pregnant and new parents, to predatory marketing that undermines breastfeeding and breaches the ABA's own obligations under the Code.

We call on the ABA to:

* Immediately cancel all sponsorships, "parenting partnerships" and any preferential arrangements with baby shows and other public events where manufacturers and distributors of Code-covered products or entities not at arms' length to such manufacturers and distributors are exhibitors and/or sponsors

* Delete all current promotions of such shows and instruct all ABA staff from social media and other platforms and volunteers that no further promotion of these events should occur

* Create a public policy on the ABA's adherence to the Code, including a commitment not to allow exhibitors that do not meet their obligations under the Code at ABA's sponsored or run events and a commitment not to exhibit at events that are sponsored or organized by such entities

* Issue a call for baby expos and public shows to stop accepting Code-violating entities as sponsors and exhibitors

ABA is Australia's largest breastfeeding support organization. It has a moral obligation to protect the families, volunteers and health care providers who rely on it. It's time to stop helping the companies that undermine breastfeeding!
