Proper seats and Accessibility for the Differently Abled People inside Trains in India.
The Issue
My Name is Yash Kumar Sethiya, I am a Screenplay writer/Filmmaker and an Active Paraplegic on Wheelchair Since 5 years, I travel via trains mostly to my relatives or tours all over India. I have been facing some serious issues after booking tickets for the past 4-5 instances consecutively... whenever we booked tickets, we got upper seats most of the time even after using my Disability Certificate for Railways...specifying my needs.
Just this last time we went on a tour to Kerala, there we booked tickets using my quota and my uncle was with me who falls under the category of a senior citizen, even then we got All 11 upper seats. The hardest part was to convince fellow passengers in the middle of the night when we boarded to exchange the seats. Some were gracious enough and for some we needed the help of TTE to settle the seats.
After that, while returning back home to my city Howrah.. we booked 4 tatkal tickets and we got all 4 upper berths again, My dad was tired and distressed, then he booked normal tickets using my Railway certificate and suddenly it got confirmed within a day and again we got 2 upper berths...It was the real pain for us with some extra luggage that I need to carry with me because of the state of my injury. But our fellow passengers were gracious enough to exchange lower seats with us.
Many of such incidents had happened with me and my other friends too in past 5 years.
Then comes the Problem of Accessibility In Trains and Railway stations, first It's real tough to board a station with no ramps or lifts and then the train with 3-4 people needed to lift the chair/person and carry him through the passage to the seat. The Disabled Bogie is mostly unclean and Non-Air-conditioned for tough hot days, Some of us have Medical needs of Air-conditioning.
I Request the Ministry of Indian Railways and Railway Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu, to do something regarding this as soon as possible. It's a common Need and right for a person to travel without being too disturbing to other passengers and dependent as well.
Thank you.
