Save Jakkur Airfield and Historic Flying school or give us a green park!

The Issue

Is there any lung space left to itself in a city like ours, from being a garden city to most polluted and dirty and greedy city, we have come a long way.

Jakkur aerodrome, a landmark of Bangalore, which use to be known as outskirts, has now seen as a hop skip and arrive destination. Since it is easily accesable, governemnt is now considering a turf club in the place of the Historic Flying School which use to operate there. Ask any NCC Airwing cadet and they get nostalgic about the flying club. The club has seen many legends taking thier first flights or owning their first hangers with flying dream machines in it. This very land, sitting in the centre of a growing city, now is attracting lot of attention and greedy eyes, whose intentions we as people do not trust. By this petition I want the government to consider a green park, if the flying school shuts shop permanently.

Being on the main road, which is the highway, there is no way that the government can give it to turf clubs or any other building project. Saving the land is important because it is part of Bangalores heritage, it  has been a flying school for ages, it will be a downer for flyers, it will also hamper daily life for the huge residential areas adjoining the club. Saving it is also important, because, if not a flying club, as people we want playgrounds and a green park and a small waterbody there. We dont want another commerical project there.

Jakkur Flying club is under a threat, like many other lands are. First there was news about this historic club being closed down. The Club is a massive land of more than 214 acres. Once in the outskirts of the city, now this magestic land sitting in the hub of development has become a honey comb attracting lot of commericial alternatives to the flying club. News of the shut down are sure, as major papers report it. This once massive air space now faces uncertainity, there are even reports of a Turf Club, which is racing centre opening. Can you imagine a horse racing centre in the vicinity of a peaceful residential area? Also as already mentioned, part of the land is also facing the state highway leading to the international Airport. Please do not disrupt the peace and tranquility of the place.

If this land goes into the hands of another commericial onslaught, then the people stand to loose another lung space, we stand to loose a possibility of the retaining of the flying club or the possiblity of a huge green lung space creation. Just imagine another cubbon park, or lalbagh, or our own central park, with lots of space to play for our children, who now play in small parking lots of buildings or dangerous roads. Our children will have a huge playgrounds with every sport available. Make it a green park. Our children will bless us that we did something for them. Right now its unfair to them, that they have little or no space to play, leave them to the mercy of the roads, or to the cramped parking lots of residential apartments. I request people to sign my petition for a green park here instead of proposed turf club or any other commercial venture.
