Jammu & Kashmir State is predominantly an agrarian economy with about 80% of its population engaged in agriculture and allied sectors. The agro-climatic diversity of the State varying from sub-tropical in Jammu, temperate in Kashmir and cold arid in Ladakh, makes it ideal for varied cultivation.

As per reports, over half a lakh acres of agricultural land have already been converted for commercial and residential purposes.

As per Agriculture department figures, two lakh kanals of agriculture land of the net sown or cultivated area of 3.5 lakh hectare has been converted for commercial and other purposes in Kashmir.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Economic Survey report 2014-15 , the estimated contribution of agriculture to State Gross Domestic Product (GSDP) has fallen from 28% in 2004-05 to 17%. The shortfall in food grains, which was 32% in 1950-51, is now 82 %.

Every day there is violation of said laws going on. Under Section 133-A of the J&K Land Revenue Act, no agriculture land can be put to any other use without obtaining prior permission of the Revenue Minister. Moreover, under Section 13 of the J&K Agrarian Reforms Act, 1976, prior permission of the Revenue Minister or an officer duly authorized by him in this behalf is required for conversion of agricultural land.

People are converting agriculture land to built house and industries without any permission. There is also dip in rice cultivation going every year. Due to Paddy land have been used for Buildings and Industries. A day will come when we did not left any agricultural land and there will be employment and crop production problems.

We are losing Paddy land at alarming rate Administration  fails to check land Conversion. The conversion of agricultural land for commercial and residential purposes is increasing day-by-day at an alarming rate in Kashmir.

So we request to the authorities to act as soon as possible to save the lives. Because of 80% of the population in J&K depends directly or indirectly on agriculture. Now time has come when we should think about vertical growth to save the agriculture land.
