Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on November 20, 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is a multilateral human rights treaty that promotes the rights of all children worldwide.

The CRC promotes the empowerment and capacity of children to be involved in the decisions and actions that affect them. This includes civil rights and freedoms, including freedom of expression, of conscience and religions, association and peaceful assembly. Access to information and children’s right to express their views in matters affecting them. The CRC also involves safeguarding children from risks to their mental, physical and emotional well-being, including emergency situations, conflict with the law, violence, abuse, exploitation, neglect and discrimination.

196 nations have become States Parties to the CRC, more than any other multilateral human rights treaty in history. The treaty has been implemented in 193 countries for over 20 years, protecting children, strengthening families and unquestionably improving the lives of children.
