Supporting Dartmouth President Beilock as a Free Speech Leader

Supporting Dartmouth President Beilock as a Free Speech Leader
The Issue
To the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College:
We, the undersigned alumni, faculty, students, staff, parents, and friends of Dartmouth, write to express our unequivocal support for President Beilock’s leadership. Her commitment to fostering a strong culture of free expression and her thoughtful navigation of the challenges facing higher education today have earned our trust.
While many of us share concerns about recent federal actions that may undermine academic freedom at peer institutions, we believe President Beilock is taking a measured and deliberate approach—considering how best to respond in a way that serves both Dartmouth and the broader academic community.
Her concrete efforts to promote open dialogue and build a robust free speech environment have distinguished Dartmouth from other institutions and positioned the College to lead, not follow. As such, we do not believe Dartmouth needs to adopt statements or strategies developed for schools with less consistent commitments to free expression—particularly those whose past actions have contributed to public distrust of higher education.
We look forward to President Beilock’s continued leadership, including future statements, reasoning, and actions on matters of free speech.
The Board’s past support of the President’s approach has strengthened Dartmouth, and we urge you to continue backing her as the right leader to guide the College through these complex times.
Sincerely,
Alumni, Faculty, Students, Staff, Parents, and Friends in Support of President Beilock
