My mother, my father, and indeed every elderly person deserve the right to be actively involved in our community activities. However, for many of them who rely on wheelchairs, this is often not the reality. Like a lot of families, my loved ones face daily challenges just getting to community events, parks, or even simple gatherings due to a lack of wheelchair-accessible infrastructure in our localities.
Our elders are the pillars of wisdom, and they have devoted their lives to nurturing us, guiding us, and contributing to society. It is now our responsibility to ensure they are not left behind simply because they cannot access facilities that should be open to everyone. With the increasing number of elderly citizens, projected to double by 2050 according to the World Health Organization, ensuring accessibility for them is more crucial than ever.
Statistics reveal a grim reality: only a small fraction of public places are fully wheelchair accessible, often leaving those bound to wheelchairs at home. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 17.4 million people, including elders, rely on mobility devices. This is a clear indicator that infrastructure changes need to happen rapidly.
The implementation of better access to each of our community centers, parks, and public spaces can start with simple, actionable steps: ensuring ramps are in place, elevators are functional, and that there are ample reserved spaces for wheelchairs in community events. We have a moral obligation to act immediately and demand local governments and city planners to prioritize this essential need.
