Support unwell healthcare workers
The Issue
WHAT HAPPENS TO NHS STAFF WHEN THEY BECOME THE PATIENT?
Every day, NHS staff dedicate their lives to caring for others. They respond to emergencies, witness trauma, support patients through crisis, and carry the emotional weight of some of the most difficult moments a person can experience.
But what happens when the caregiver becomes the one who is injured?
What happens when a nurse develops PTSD after a traumatic incident at work? When a paramedic experiences psychological trauma after years of exposure to crisis? When a doctor suffers burnout, anxiety, depression, or a physical injury while caring for patients?
Do we support them with the same compassion they have shown others?
Or do they become another absence statistic, another staffing problem, another employee left to navigate recovery alone?
Healthcare workers are human beings, not disposable resources.
No member of NHS staff should be made to feel that their value ends the moment they become physically or psychologically unwell.
Those who dedicate their lives to caring for others deserve dignity, support, protection, and a fair opportunity to recover without fear of stigma, discrimination, financial hardship, or loss of career.
We call upon NHS leaders and policymakers to strengthen support for healthcare workers affected by workplace trauma and injury through:
• Mandatory psychological support following traumatic workplace incidents.
• Trauma-informed management and return-to-work processes.
• Fair and compassionate sickness and redeployment procedures.
• Protection against discrimination related to physical or mental health conditions.
• Greater accountability for staff wellbeing and psychological safety.
• Recognition that workplace trauma and injury can have life-changing consequences for healthcare workers and their families.
No healthcare worker should have to choose between their recovery and their career.
We care for patients.
Who cares for us when we break?
