Support Trans Inclusion in Lezvolley: Amend Discriminatory Policies
Support Trans Inclusion in Lezvolley: Amend Discriminatory Policies
The Issue
We, the undersigned, are members and supporters of the Lezvolley community, a league that we believed was dedicated to fostering inclusivity and enjoyment through volleyball. We are writing to advocate for an important change in your league’s participation policies to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender identity, are welcome to join and compete.
The tournament held on August 10, 2024, purposely excluded participants who identify as trans men. This action not only marginalized a group of individuals but also undermines the principles of diversity and inclusion that your league stands for. Volleyball, especially in a recreational setting, should promote teamwork, camaraderie, and fair play—values that must extend to all participants, regardless of gender identity.
We propose the following changes to the Lezvolley participation policies:
Inclusion of Transgender Participants: Amend the league’s rules to explicitly allow transgender individuals to participate in the league according to their gender identity.
Non-Discrimination Policy: Implement a clear non-discrimination policy that affirms the rights of all players, including transgender individuals, to compete in a respectful and supportive environment.
Education and Training: Provide training for league organizers, coaches, and players on gender diversity and inclusivity to foster a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
These changes will help ensure that the Lezvolley league is a place where all individuals feel valued and can contribute to the sport they love.
Many sports leagues, including various local and national organizations, have successfully implemented inclusive policies, leading to greater diversity and stronger community engagement. Studies and personal testimonies have shown that inclusive policies positively impact both individuals and teams, enhancing the overall experience and performance of all participants.
We urge the Lezvolley board and decision-makers to review and adopt these proposed changes. By doing so, we can build a more inclusive and supportive environment that reflects our community’s values and embraces the diverse talents of all players.
Please be aware that, should the policies remain unchanged, we will not be participating in future tournaments. This decision reflects our commitment to supporting inclusivity and fairness in our community.
