Support Trans and Non-Binary Hockey Players in Minnesota
The Issue
The Women's Hockey Association of Minnesota (WHAM) has long been more than just a sporting arena; it's been a sanctuary, a place of belonging for many local transgender and non-binary members. These athletes, like their counterparts, want to lace up their skates, hit the ice, and revel in the camaraderie of their friends while playing the sport they love intensely.
Unfortunately, in recent days, the safe and inclusive nature of this league has been challenged by a small number of players, asking for Minnesota Hockey (the governing body of WHAM) to 'ban biological males.' We can do better. For everyone who steps onto a WHAM ice rink, they should feel accepted and welcomed just as they are.
Let's remember that sport has the power to unite, to bridge differences, and to foster a sense of belonging. It is a fact that participation in organized sports can have profound mental health benefits, providing an essential outlet for stress, building resilience, and boosting self-esteem. Enabling our transgender and non-binary community members to fully participate in WHAM activities can contribute significantly to their overall well-being (source: American Psychological Association).
This petition comes as more than just a simple request. It's an acknowledgement of the crucial role WHAM plays in the lives of our trans/non-binary friends, families, and local communities. It is therefore of utmost importance that we rally behind each individual's right to sport, regardless of gender identity.
Your signature carries the strong message that sport should be a space for everyone - no exceptions. Assert your support for transgender and non-binary hockey players playing in the WHAM and help us ensure the association renews its commitment to inclusivity. Sign this petition. Let's foster a more accepting and inclusive WHAM community together.
