Friends,
As Australia burns, Scott Morrison is rumoured to have jetted overseas for a family holiday.[1]
That’s right. Tragic bushfires are burning across the country. Extreme heat is gripping us this week and towns are running out of water, yet our Prime Minister has fled the country. Those on the frontlines don’t get this luxury.
Scott Morrison tells us to be quiet, chill out, enjoy the cricket, whilst failing to show the leadership we need when we’re in the midst of a massive climate crisis.
- WHEN: 9am TOMORROW - Thursday 19 December
- WHERE: outside Scott Morrison’s Kirribilli Residence, 109 Kirribilli Avenue
- BRING: Your face masks, best signs, friends and family
Nothing about these fires, this heat, this drought is normal. This is being turbocharged by climate change, fuelled by the mining and burning of coal and gas, enabled by Scott Morrison and our Government.
Australians deserve better. Every day that the transition beyond coal and gas is delayed, the challenge ahead becomes harder, the impacts more painful. If politicians care about us and our future, they must:
1. Increase support for Indigenous land management and the Rural Fire Services to manage increasingly dangerous fires.
2. Commit to real climate action:
- No new coal, oil and gas, including Adani’s mega mine
- 100% renewable energy and exports by 2030
- Funding for a just transition and jobs for workers and their communities
With hope
The School Strikers 4 Climate Action
PS: Please donate generously to our bushfire fundraiser appeal with the Red Cross.
This event is being held on the land of the Cammeraygal people. It is stolen land. Sovereignty was never ceded. There can be no climate justice without justice for First Nations people.
