Friends,
Incredible. That’s the only word we have to describe the Climate Strike on September 20th, even two weeks later. Just Incredible.
Over 350,000 Australians. Over 125 locations. And across the globe? Up to 6 million people from over 150 countries and 7 different continents stood in solidarity on the largest single-day of climate protest ever.
Nobody expected the climate strikes to become this big when we got going just 10 months ago. But the growth of this movement across Australia and around the world shows just how deeply people care and how committed they are to confronting the climate crisis.
Watch and share this highlights video that captures the growing power of our movement
It takes a movement to tackle this crisis, which is why we are SO grateful for your support. Whether you are a student, from one of the over 30 unions who turned out in support, one of the almost 3000 businesses that supported their staff to come, an adult who had to take time off to join us or someone who took the time to donate to our crowdfunder to make the strikes amazing. To all of you. Thank you.
But words aren’t enough to stop the devastating impact of climate change. Which is why we need movements. To keep on pushing for real action on our demands:
- No new coal, oil or gas projects, including Adani's mine.
- 100% renewable energy and exports by 2030
- Funding for a just transition and job creation for fossil workers and communities.
Adani is still scheduled to go ahead with its dangerous Carmichael mine. Gas fracking threatens the Northern Territory. First Nations people are bearing the impacts of this crisis first and worst. Scott Morrison and his government are still pretending ‘business as usual’ won’t hurt us, telling us to simply stop “stressing” whilst his Government does nothing to tackle the biggest challenge we’ve ever faced. We cannot leave the protection of people and our planet in their hands. Too much is at stake.
School strikers are currently debriefing, talking with partners and planning our next moves. We’ll be in touch soon about those plans. But in the meantime, we need all of you to step up in your own authentic ways. That could include:
- Joining or forming a local climate action group to keep building momentum on our demands
- Having a conversation with friends/colleagues about how you can grow the momentum started by the climate strikes
- Signing up to volunteer with or donate to one of the many organisations across Australia that are fighting for climate justice.
The complexity of this crisis means that we need everyone to step up and join us. Thank you for all you do. We look forward to taking on the challenges ahead together.
With hope and appreciation,
The School Strikers 4 Climate
