Support the Revision of The Northeast News Board

Support the Revision of The Northeast News Board
The Issue
We, the undersigned, support non-profit community journalism, namely Kansas City's Northeast News. In order for this publication to be more equipped to serve the Northeast community, we call for a revision of the Historic Northeast Media, Inc. board to include board members that better represent the diverse community and the future of the Northeast News.
The newspaper has seen many changes since it was purchased by HNE Media in 2022. It became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2023. Unfortunately, it has received a lack of support and initiative by the new ownership which, culminated in the July 2024 dismissal of Michael Bushnell, who served as the publisher for 26 years. He reported on hundred of events that kept the community informed.
The newspaper has, unfortunately, cut back on the articles we rely on for unbiased news. Hundreds of homes receive the newspaper every week to their door without it we have been disconnected to what's happening right in our own neighborhood.
Local journalism is becoming more rare as newspapers are having to shut their doors across the country. It is important to protect and ensure the longevity of what we do have - a free, local newspaper.
We are asking for transparency from the Board and ability to see it reflect the diversity and interests of our wonderful neighborhoods. We also want to see the board work collaboratively with the newspaper staff as they work hard to create a well crafted newspaper every week.
Editorial Independence & Donor Transparency Policy
Current Board Members
- Bobbi Baker - Executive Director of NE Chamber of Commerce
- Manuel "Manny" Abarca IV - Secretary & 1st District Legislator of Jackson County Missouri
- Ellen Goebel - Treasurer & Accountant
