Support the registration of the Veterans Tartan
The Issue
Help Us Get the Veterans Tartan Registered
At Thistle and Cloth, we’re proud to support the campaign to register the Veterans Tartan, and we’re asking the veterans community to help us make it happen.
The tartan was designed by Hannah, (a veteran) , and members of the Scots Veterans Drums and Pipes band working alongside Lochcarron of Scotland. It was originally created for the Veterans Kilt Making Project, which Hannah was the tutor for, and is now taking forward with the support of Veteran Charities.
What started as a project to make kilts for the veteran community has grown into something with the potential to mean much more: a tartan that brings people together and represents a community with a shared history and experience.
We believe it deserves to be recognised and registered, giving it a lasting place in Scotland’s tartan heritage.
A design that brings us together
The design itself has been carefully considered. The proposed Veterans Tartan draws on the Argylls tartan, commonly recognised today as Government 1A, while also incorporating the iconic Cameron of Erracht tartan. We recognise that it would be impossible to include every regimental tartan and the history each one carries. Instead, the aim has been to bring these influences together in a single design that veterans from across the services can feel connected to and proud of. We hope it will be a tartan that unites, rather than distinguishes, and gives the wider veterans community something they can share.
But we need your help to get there.
We’re asking veterans, veterans’ organisations, service associations, charities and anyone who supports our Armed Forces community to get behind the campaign.
If you’re a veteran, we’d love to hear from you. If you’re part of an organisation supporting veterans, we’d welcome a letter of support explaining why you believe the Veterans Tartan should be registered. We’re also inviting individuals to add their names in support of the campaign.
Every signature and letter will help us show that this tartan matters to the people it was created to represent. This is about recognising veterans, celebrating the connections that bring people together and creating something that can be carried forward for years to come.
You don’t need to write a long letter or make a big statement. Sometimes, simply saying why you support the tartan and what it means to you is enough.
If you’d like to support the campaign, please get in touch with Thistle and Cloth via hello@thistleandcloth.com or
Please help us spread the word, add your support and help get the Veterans Tartan registered.
Together, we can make it happen.
