Support the people CARE Act 119 Congress

The Issue

The People CARE Act is looking to improve the accessibility and effectiveness of federal assistance programs that serve vulnerable populations. As social workers, we have committed to social justice as the NASW Code of Ethics states we are to pursue social change with a focus on vulnerable populations. Right now, individuals are facing barriers to receiving services that can give them a better quality of life. Without action, these disparities will continue to be exacerbated. Inequalities and poverty will continue to grow within our country. This act aims to simplify access to aid and prevent loss of benefits. This ensures the individual's dignity and their self-determination.

Current assistance programs create boundaries for families by being difficult to navigate. This act would create a more accessible and efficient system by attempting to consolidate similar agencies to reduce time, cost, and the overall hassle of applying for benefits. This bill also reduces the harsh cut-off of services by allowing for a gradual reduction of assistance with higher-income income. When individuals are in fear of losing benefits that they rely on, they are less likely to attempt to earn more; this act attempts to ease that transition.

Social Work is at the core of who we are. We advocate for the well-being of all individuals. We are dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people. The People CARE Act encapsulates the NASW Code of Ethics. The code emphasizes our value of service, and that regardless of a person's background, everyone deserves an equal opportunity to thrive.

Endorsing this Act means that Congress can continue transformative change and further participate in the commitment to the welfare of its citizens. Providing fair access to essential services is of benefit to everyone. In doing so, we can strengthen our society and foster a healthier and more educated population. People will not live in fear of being deprived, and our communities will continue to grow.
