SUPPORT THE NORTHEASTERN RESIDENT ASSISTANT COOPERATIVE
The Issue
The Northeastern Resident Assistant Cooperative (NRAC) consists of Resident Assistants (RAs) at the Northeastern University Boston campus. We represent our own shared sentiments and those of numerous Northeastern community members, creators, mentors, leaders, and organizers. We believe in grassroots organizing and strength in numbers.
The senior leadership of Residential Life at Northeastern (ResLife) has failed to accommodate RA desires for better working conditions. RAs continue to perform embodied, affective labor which puts our personal health and safety at risk - we work where we eat where we sleep where we live with our residents.
RAs successfully utilized collective bargaining in January 2021 with regards to one-time repayment requests from the department. However, motions for unionization or collective barganing on a larger scale have been unsuccessful to date.
Top-down changes and messages often come about unexpectedly and are highly reactionary to what is going on at the moment - these are bandaids. ResLife policies and operations need an overhaul to heal past mistakes and misgivings to achieve competency in today's society. We will strive towards steady progress to improve material conditions today and tomorrow, for always.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shifted the way ResLife operates and we are now at a critical point where we get to create a stronger, safer, community culture or stick to the subpar status quo. The time to act is now.
