Support the Nebraska Second Chance Act
The Issue
Ten years ago, I made some poor decisions that led to serious mistakes and ultimately a felony conviction. I served my sentence and since then, have worked tirelessly to transform my life. Today, I am a devoted family member, an active community volunteer, and a responsible citizen, yet my past still haunts my future opportunities. This reality not only affects me but thousands of others in Nebraska who have turned their lives around but continue to face barriers due to past convictions.
Nebraska lacks a formal process to grant second chances to those who have demonstrably changed for the better. Other states have enacted similar laws, enabling reformed individuals to reintegrate into society fully, secure better jobs, and contribute positively to their communities. The Nebraska Second Chance Act could provide a blueprint for fair and balanced legislation, offering redemption and practical opportunities for those committed to personal change.
Statistics show that gainful employment significantly reduces recidivism rates. According to the Brennan Center for Justice, stable employment can lower the likelihood of reoffending by up to 67%. Yet, a criminal record can reduce the likelihood of a callback or job offer by nearly 50%, as per a study by the National Institute of Justice. This disconnect means that those seeking to mend their path are met with undue hurdles, hindering not just their reopening but our state's growth and safety.
Our proposal for the Nebraska Second Chance Act is simple: establish a system in which individuals can petition for their records to be sealed after demonstrating substantial rehabilitation. This includes completing their sentence, maintaining a clean record for an extended period, and contributing positively to their communities. Such measures would ensure that only those who have genuinely changed are granted this opportunity.
We urge Nebraska legislators to consider this law as a compassionate and logical step forward. It is not about erasing past mistakes but about acknowledging current responsibility. By implementing the Nebraska Second Chance Act, we can uplift individuals eager to contribute to society, enhancing our communities in trust, security, and productivity.
Please sign this petition to advocate for a fair second chance for those who have earned it. Together, we can work towards a more inclusive and forgiving Nebraska.
