RCOY LAC started this petition to COP26

English - Portuguese - Spanish

Hello everyone, we are a group of young people from Latin America and the Caribbean who have been working for months on a document that seeks to reach the governments of the region to take concrete actions against climate change. That is why we have started this petition in search of young people from all over the region and the world to support with their signature the LAC Youth Declaration on Climate Change 2021 that will be presented in events such as the pre-COP and the COP26, among others.

The scientists of the world have already launched their red alert for humanity. The Latin American and Caribbean region is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change and it is essential that the population is informed, awared and prepared to adapt to these consequences, leaving no one behind.

In this context and within the framework of the Regional Conference of Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean on climate change (RCOY LAC), we seek to encourage the Declaration of the LAC Youth, a collaborative document that represents the interests, opinions and demands of youth on issues related to climate change and the current emergency that the countries of the world and the region are going through.

The document that will be presented to public decision makers in different national and international spheres is based on 3 key axes: education and awareness, decarbonization of the economy and changes in land use.

From the young people of the region, the decision makers of the national governments of Latin America and the Caribbean are asked to commit to the following 6 goals:

  • Signature and ratification of the Escazú Agreement by 100% of the countries of the region.
  • That 50% of international financing be allocated to the execution of national adaptation plans focused on reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience.
  • Protect at least 30% of terrestrial and marine ecosystems by 2030.
  • Reduce fossil fuel subsidies to zero by 2030.
  • Halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
  • Achieve development that includes a just transition where adaptation and mitigation measures aim to reduce poverty and generate green jobs.
