Support the Illawarra hotel's renovation proposal
The issue
For the past six years, we have dedicated our lives to breathing new life into The Illawarra Hotel, a place cherished by both locals and visitors in Wollongong. Our dream was not just to maintain the historical essence of this beloved establishment but to rejuvenate it entirely. We envisioned restoring the two condemned upper levels, honouring its 86-year-old legacy and elevating it to become one of New South Wales' premier heritage pubs.
Sadly, our development application (DA) aimed at this respectful transformation was recently declined by Wollongong City Council’s Planning Department. The Illawarra Hotel embodies an essential chapter of our city's history and culture. Denying its full restoration not only limits its potential but also stifles community spirit. Historically, this building has only been partially usable for over three decades, which restricts its capability to serve and engage locals and visitors to its full potential.
This project was never about demolishing the past. Every element of our restoration plan was meticulously designed to celebrate the pub's rich history while adding value to the city’s heritage. Completing this renovation would have allowed The Illawarra Hotel to fully serve as a community hub, hosting vibrant cultural events and nurturing social connections.
We need your support to bring this dream to life and convince the Wollongong City Council to reconsider their decision. Restoring the top two levels of The Illawarra Hotel will enhance the cultural fabric of Wollongong and enrich its historic landscape.
By signing this petition, you stand with us in preserving and revitalizing an iconic part of Wollongong's heritage. Please sign to show Wollongong City Council that our community cares about The Illawarra Hotel's future, encouraging them to approve our DA for a full renovation that respects both history and progress. Your signature could play a pivotal role in realizing a cherished future for our community's beloved pub.
