The Issue

Hamilton County Commissioner Alicia Reece has long championed affordable housing, securing a full 30% property tax rebate for the 2023 and 2025 taxpayers and consistently introducing it in the county budget each year, in addition to supporting over $60 million in affordable housing investments, including $6 million in property tax relief.

In 1996, Hamilton County voters approved a half-cent sales tax to fund the construction of two riverfront stadiums along the Ohio River. As part of that agreement, residents were promised a 30% property tax rebate. This commitment was key in gaining public support, ensuring taxpayers would not bear an undue financial burden from the stadium complex.

Decades later, the full promise remains unfulfilled, leaving residents facing financial strain. Many taxpayers feel frustrated and deceived, as the relief they were assured has been delayed for over twenty years. This is not only a fiscal issue but a matter of trust and accountability between government and citizens.  Currently as a result of the new stadium lease, the Bengals are guarantee $300 million while the taxpayers have been sidelined once again.

Fulfilling the original agreement is critical now and every year the county commissioners must vote on rather or not to implement a 30% rebate. Rising living costs disproportionately affect seniors, veterans, low-income residents, and people with disabilities striving to remain in their homes. A 30% property tax rebate would provide essential relief to families managing tight budgets and unexpected expenses.

Returning these funds to taxpayers in the form of a rebate could keep people in their homes, boost consumer spending, support local businesses, and invigorate the local economy. Yet the current rebate is 4.5% rebate for 2026—far below the promised 30%. Homeowners deserve better.

We urge all Hamilton County Commissioners to prioritize this issue and implement the full 30% property tax rebate when it is up for consideration again. Residents deserve both the financial relief and the trustworthiness promised to them.
