Support the freedom of Expression
The Issue
Our organization, “Take Up Space, Sis,” has been dedicated for nearly a year to creating safe spaces where individuals can come together, express themselves without fear of judgment, and feel connected. As part of our ongoing efforts, we have planned a drag show, to be held on public property, where our previous events have been held.
This event is not merely a celebration of diversity but a symbolic stand for freedom of speech and expression. It is intended to be a family-friendly community gathering. It is free to attend, open to the public, and designed to create a welcoming space for those who wish to participate.
There will be no adult content, no vulgarity, and nothing that falls outside the standards expected of a public community event.
Research in psychology consistently shows that social connection, acceptance, and a sense of belonging are critical components of individual and community well-being. According to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the need for belonging is a fundamental human need, second only to basic physical and safety needs. Community events that foster acceptance and inclusion help strengthen social bonds, reduce isolation, and create healthier, more connected communities. This event is an opportunity to bring people together and to demonstrate that every member of our community deserves a place where they feel welcome and respected.
Unfortunately, despite our compliance and the love and effort put into organizing this event, there has been a concerning effort to shut it down by individuals who disagree with its purpose and message. This turns a blind eye to the principles of inclusivity and equality that are integral to our community and society at large. It is crucial to recognize that freedom of speech and expression are cornerstones of our rights, ensuring everyone, regardless of their identity, can celebrate and express their true selves.
While we recognize that not everyone will agree with this event, we respect the right of every community member to hold their own beliefs, values, and opinions. Our goal is not to change anyone’s convictions, but simply to create a space where people who wish to attend can gather, celebrate, and feel welcomed.
We believe public spaces should remain accessible to all members of our community and all lawful community events, regardless of differing viewpoints. The strength of a community is not found in complete agreement, but in its ability to coexist with mutual respect.
This drag show is not only about entertainment; it's a beacon of solidarity, uniting people across different spectrums of life, spreading a message of love, acceptance, and community harmony.
We urge community leaders to stand against harassment, exclusion, and efforts to deny lawful community events the opportunity to take place. We call upon supporters and allies within the community and beyond to join us in advocating for this event, recognizing the broader implications of ensuring such expressions are free and safe.
Help us send a message that love, diversity, and acceptance should never be silenced. Please sign this petition to support the continuation of Levelland’s first drag show. With your help, we can ensure that these important voices are heard and celebrated. Sign now, and let your voice be part of this stand for freedom and inclusion.
