I Support Carlisle's Proposed Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

The Issue

Currently in America only 22 states and Washington DC prohibit the discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) citizens. Pennsylvania is not one of these states, however this inequality doesn’t need to include the Carlisle community. Carlisle is home to a diverse population but currently protection from discrimination is only afforded to some. Our LGBTQ citizens don’t have the same rights to feel safe from hate and discrimination as our heterosexual and cisgender (a person who identifies with the gender they were born with) citizens.  Today an LGBTQ person could get married on Saturday and fired from their job on Monday because their employer doesn't approve of their sexuality. They could make a reservation for their one-year anniversary and be denied service. They’re not even guaranteed the security of housing. A landlord could refuse to renew their lease and/or not rent to them at all. As a resident of Carlisle I strongly feel this inequality is unacceptable and should no longer be tolerated. Please join me in showing the Carlisle Borough Council that this Anti-Discrimination Ordinance is overwhelmingly supported. Furthermore by signing this petition you’re contributing to the creation of a culture in Carlisle that is inclusive and supportive towards our LGBTQ neighbors. Carlisle is a beautiful community and all of its residents deserve the right to live, work, and love here.
