In Texas, anyone can currently call themselves a "Veterinary Technician" or "Vet Tech," even if they have not completed an accredited education, passed the national licensing examination, or earned a state license. This creates confusion for pet owners, diminishes the achievements of Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs), and undermines the value of professional credentials. We are asking Texas lawmakers to protect the titles "Veterinary Technician" and "Vet Tech" so they may only be used by individuals who have met the state's education, examination, and licensing requirements. Protecting both titles is essential because they are the terms most commonly recognized and used by the public, employers, and members of the veterinary profession. Title protection promotes transparency, recognizes professional qualifications, strengthens the veterinary healthcare team, and helps pet owners identify credentialed professionals who have demonstrated competency in veterinary medicine.
