The Issue

Terre Haute, a city rich with history and architectural beauty, is confronting a challenge that threatens to erase its heritage, the neglect of historical preservation. Despite having numerous aged buildings that narrate the story of our past, Terre Haute lags decades behind in protecting these invaluable assets. This delay in the enforcement and updating of preservation ordinances has resulted in the irrevocable loss of much of the city's charm.

Many of Terre Haute's significant structures have either been demolished or left in despair due to insufficient preservation efforts. Historic districts like Farrington's Grove,  12-points, Downtown, and Collett Park which boast an array of architecturally significant buildings, are at risk of deterioration. Each building holds narratives and memories that reflect our community's cultural and historical journey. Their loss not only diminishes the beauty of the city but also erases tangible connections to our history.

The preservation of our historical sites is crucial, not just for aesthetic reasons but also for community identity, local economy, and educational purposes. Historical conservation boosts tourism, offers educational opportunities for schools, and instills community pride. Moreover, studies have shown that cities investing in preservation initiatives see revitalization in local economies and enhancement in quality of life for residents.

In urging support for GO 2, 2025, this petition calls for immediate action to implement Terre Haute's historical preservation ordinance. This long overdue resolution will ensure that  preservation measures are efficient, funding is allocated to rescue vulnerable buildings, and new developments respect the cultural fabric of historic districts.

Please sign this petition and stand with us to save our heritage and restore the pride of Terre Haute. Your signature can provide the momentum needed to secure the future of our city's historical monuments. Support GO 2, 2025 and let’s protect our past for the generations to come.
