The Issue

Dania Beach Pier is already one of the most meaningful places on the South Florida coast. Every year, the pier attracts thousands of visitors and fishermen. Families, local residents, tourists, and people who simply want to see the ocean, feel the breeze, and spend time at one of Broward County’s strongest waterfront locations come here. The City’s official website also describes Dania Beach Fishing Pier as a place that attracts thousands of visitors and fishermen annually.

For many people, the pier is more than a structure over the water. It is the natural endpoint of the coastal route from the Hollywood Broadwalk to Dania Beach. It is a place where the movement along the shoreline slows down, the ocean opens in front of you, and the city has a chance to create a truly memorable public destination. Dania Beach is already in a period of growth and renewal. The City itself speaks about the renaissance taking place in Dania Beach and connects it with the development of public spaces, the Beach Master Plan, the Parks Master Plan, stormwater improvements, Dania Pointe, Lucky Fish, and other important changes in the urban environment. Against this background, Dania Beach Pier should become part of the larger conversation about the future of the city.

Today, the pier is already loved and in demand. Its potential as a public waterfront destination is only partially realized. Right now, it is primarily a place for fishing, walking, and ocean views. This is an important foundation that should be preserved and strengthened. A location like this can give the city much more.

We propose that the Sun Pier concept be considered as a new long-term vision for the future of Dania Beach Pier. Sun Pier is a redevelopment vision that preserves the pier’s fishing culture and opens it up as a stronger public space for Dania Beach residents, fishermen, families, visitors, small businesses, and the entire South Florida community. In this vision, Dania Beach Pier can bring together fishing and sport fishing, walking areas, ocean viewpoints, shaded rest areas, marine education, an architectural lighthouse element, a potential underwater oceanarium, local dining, retail, and public spaces for families, events, and everyday city life.

A stronger pier can also bring practical economic and social benefits: more reasons for visitors to spend time in Dania Beach, more support for local restaurants and small businesses, more family-friendly public space, more opportunities for marine education, and a stronger identity for the city’s waterfront. At the center of the concept is the image of the sun. Florida is known around the world as the Sunshine State. For Dania Beach, this is an opportunity to create a waterfront landmark that is clear, emotional, and instantly recognizable as a symbol of this place: sun, ocean, fishing, recreation, movement, openness, and life by the water.

This project concerns more than the residents of Dania Beach. Dania Beach Pier is located in Dania Beach, but its meaning reaches beyond one city: it is a place for residents, fishermen, families, local businesses, coastal visitors, and people from across South Florida who come to the ocean for fishing, walking, recreation, and time by the water. Dania Beach is Broward County’s first city. Today, it has the opportunity to create a much stronger, more modern, and more vibrant public space - one of South Florida’s most memorable waterfront destinations. Now it is important to show that interest in Sun Pier extends beyond one team.

The visual concept of Sun Pier has been prepared for public viewing. The project presentation video can be viewed here:

We ask the City of Dania Beach to officially recognize the public support for the Sun Pier concept, support its consideration, and give this initiative the opportunity to move forward as a serious waterfront redevelopment vision for the future of Dania Beach Pier. Please sign this petition if you believe that Dania Beach Pier deserves a new vision and official consideration as one of South Florida’s future landmark waterfront projects.
