The issue

We are students from New Plymouth Girls' High School, involved in a Level 3 Social Studies internal assessment. Our project is dedicated to advocating for increased support for the SPCA, as we believe that more needs to be done to support this crucial organization. The SPCA plays an indispensable role in our communities and provides critical services for the welfare and safety of animals across Aotearoa.

Despite their immense contribution, the SPCA often operates with limited resources, relying heavily on donations and volunteer work. Insufficient funding can severely limit their capacity to rescue and rehabilitate animals, as well as to educate the public on responsible pet ownership. Presently, the government provides some support, but it is not enough to meet the growing needs of the SPCA’s efforts.

Animal welfare is not just a charitable concern; it reflects on the humanity and compassion of our society. The animals protected by the SPCA—abandoned, injured, and abused—deserve a second chance at life. By providing additional government funds, the SPCA can expand their facilities, improve existing services, and conduct more effective outreach and educational programs, thereby reinforcing the safety and well-being of domestic animals nationwide.

A national survey conducted by the Ministry for Primary Industries indicated broad public support for government-led initiatives in animal welfare, with over 75% of respondents advocating for more public funds to be directed towards such causes. By fulfilling this need, we ensure not only the protection of animals but also the promotion of a compassionate societal ethic.

Please join us in urging the New Zealand government to prioritize animal welfare and safety by increasing financial support for the SPCA. Your signature can help make a significant difference for animals yearning for care and protection. Sign this petition to stand with the SPCA and strengthen our commitment to animal welfare in New Zealand.
