Support SPC Faculty and Staff

The Issue

On July 9, 2020, St Petersburg College announced plans to cut faculty and staff salaries and amend annual and continuing contracts. A new contract was sent to all faculty and staff on July 16th, stating that salaries are:

"subject to an adjustment or salary reduction on a temporary basis in accordance with the College’s strategic personnel plan, and based on a financial urgency, decrease in state appropriations or student enrollment, and other such factors as may adversely impact the budget and operations.”

To date the administration at St. Petersburg College has failed to provide faculty and staff with any information regarding the amount or percentage of salary cuts, the duration of those cuts, or the plan to recoup those salary losses.

Instead, they are requiring as a condition of employment that faculty and staff sign a blank check giving SPC the right to cut salaries as much as they like, for whatever reason they want, and for whatever length of time they decide. Meanwhile, the college continues to engage in the hiring of administrators, full time faculty, and special contractors.

SPC faculty and staff have gone without salary increases for more than 5 years. Yet we have consistently and effectively responded to unprecedented changes and increased workloads in order to serve our students and our community.

We call on St. Petersburg College President Tonjua Williams and the Board of Trustees to eliminate the broad new contract language and, at minimum, to preserve existing faculty and staff salaries.
