BRING BACK CHILDHOOD - OUR KIDS NEED IT!

The pervasive influence of social media on today's youth is undeniable. As a concerned parent, guardian, or citizen, I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that these platforms have on our children. It's no secret that social media can distort reality, creating an illusion of perfection, which is often unattainable, especially for our young, impressionable teenagers.

Numerous studies have highlighted the link between excessive social media use and mental health issues among teens. According to research conducted by the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG), approximately one in five teenagers in our nation experience symptoms of anxiety or depression. The constant barrage of idealised images and pressure to conform has led to a rise in mental health challenges, from low self-esteem to severe anxiety and depression.

In the global context, Australia and the European Union have recognised the dangers of unrestricted access to social media for young people, and have started implementing minimum age thresholds for social media usage to combat these issues. It's time for South Africa to take similar proactive steps to safeguard our youth!

We strongly urge the South African government to implement a minimum age restriction of 16 for all social media platforms. This restriction will provide a buffer period for emotional maturity, allowing our young minds to develop resilience and a sense of self-worth, free from external pressures.

By setting a clear age limit, we empower parents and educators to have more control over the content children are exposed to, thereby fostering a safer online environment that promotes positive development.

Join us in this effort to protect the future of our children by creating a safer, more responsible digital landscape. We need your support to advocate for this crucial change. Please sign this petition to urge the South African government to enforce stricter age regulations on social media. Together, we can make a difference and create a healthier future for our youth!
