Thank you all for your support this far! We wanted to mention something important that was not in the original post.
After the Fern Hollow Bridge collapsed in 2022, the City of Pittsburgh did reach out to the owner of The Evergreen (Phil). They wanted to discuss forfeiting his business parking while the bridge was down because of the extra traffic that would be re-routed down Penn Ave. They were concerned about rush hour traffic.
When Phil spoke to the City and explained his parking does not contribute to rush hour traffic because the parking is only for 10am -2:30pm and there is not traffic during that time. The City surveyed the area and Phil documented the traffic during 10am -2:30pm over several weeks. The City came to the decision that PARKING ON PENN AVE BETWEEN 10am - 2:30pm DID NOT CONTRIBUTE TO ADDITIONAL TRAFFIC OR SAFETY CONCERNS and allowed Phil to have parking for his business in 2022.
It is unclear as to how the City ruled that the parking was not an issue when the bridge was down and now with the new bridge up and less traffic on Penn Ave, the City rules there is traffic and safety issues, without even conducting second survey.
The campaign to remove parking on Penn Ave was spearheaded by Councilwoman Barb Warwick (District 5). She is using this business and its owner for her own political gain. Her constituents in Regent Square were most affected when the Fern Hollow Bridge fell, it was their lifeline to the rest of the East End. We understand that the time while the bridge was down, must have been frustrating for those residents. Although for Barb to attack and use The Evergreen as a way to make up for her shortcoming during that time is not honorable or professional.
Please continue to sign and share this petition to reinstate parking on Penn Ave, so that corrupt and dishonest behavior is not rewarded in Pittsburgh.
Thank you all again!
